If Hanging Ten on your surf board is your idea of a great vacation then Hawaii is the place for you to live your dreams. The islands are well known for providing surfing enthusiasts with never ending excitement. Check out some of the best places to test your skills. Even if you have never tried this sport in the past Hawaii is a perfect place to experience surfing for the first time. So what are you waiting for? Kowabunga, Dude...Surf's up!
For the more accomplished surfers the North Shore of O'ahu is a magnet that is impossible to resist. The powerful waters of the North Shore are responsible for creating this adrenaline junkie's paradise. You can pit your wave riding skills against some of the most intense surfing conditions that are found anywhere in these islands or just watch the fearless exploits of others. The beaches along the North Shore are where you will find many of the best surfers in the world and it is definitely not for the faint of heart. If you add this destination to your list you should prepare to have your Game On as soon as your feet hit the shore.
The months of November through February are when the surfing frenzy at the North Shore hits its peak. This is the best time for you to look for that one perfect wave. Extreme surfers are eager to hit these beaches where the height of the waves can exceed 30 feet. Want to ride the Pipeline? This Hawaii location might just give you that one incredible surfing opportunity that you have been dreaming about.
During the winter months the Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Big Wave invitational is hosted each winter at Waimea Bay and the Billabong Pipleline Masters takes place at Ehukai Beach. The O'Neill World Cup Surfing Championship is another North Shore event that can be watched from the shores of Sunset Beach.
The summer season may not have the extreme surf conditions that occur in the winter but the waves are still strong enough to satisfy less accomplished surfers. This is the time of year when even novices can tackle even the North Shore environment and learn the basics.
There are dozens of places in Hawaii where you can learn to surf safely. A family friendly surf vacation can be enjoyed by every member of your family when you visit Maui. Some resorts offer their guests free beginner classes, but you will find plenty of professionals who can provide you with customized, private instruction for individuals or families.
Most instructors will begin a class by having you practice your moves on land. You will have a board and learn how to balance and position your body. After you have conquered the basics you will be supervised as you put your new skills to the test in the ocean with the real waves. Many group classes offer instruction for ages 8 to adult, but there are some surf classes that younger children can participate in as well.

Eddie Would Go $9.99 In the 1970s, a decade before bumper stickers and T-shirts bearing the phrase Eddie Would Go began popping up all over the Hawaiian islands and throughout the surfing world, Eddie Aikau was proving what it meant to be a "waterman." As a fearless and gifted surfer, he rode the biggest waves in the world; as the first and most famous Waimea Bay lifeguard on the North Shore, he saved hundreds of lives from its treacherous waters; and as a proud Hawaiian, he sacrificed his life to save the crew aboard the voyaging canoe Hokule'a. Eddie Would Go is the compelling story of Eddie Aikau's legendary life and legacy, a pipeline into the exhilarating world of surfing, and an important chronicle of the Hawaiian Renaissance and the emergence of modern Hawaii. |

VAS Entertainment Eddies Day DVD (0) $25 The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau event director George Downing has made a famous statement: In Downing's words, The Bay calls the day. That call has been made only seven times in the past 23 years. It's as if the ocean itself is determined to keep this event . The winners - Clyde Aikau, Keone Downing, Noah Johnson, Ross Clarke-Jones, Kelly Slater and Bruce Irons all possess extraordinary skills in the ocean. Each has had a peak day at Waimea Bay, when paddling power, fitness, wave selection, surfing equipment, confidence and courage have all come together. The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau we know has a forerunner: the Eddie Aikau Memorial, held in 1986 in beautiful 10-foot surf at Sunset Beach and won by local ripper Denton Miyamura. It was a lot of fun, but Quiksilver's Bruce Raymond and Bob McKnight saw a chance to create a true surfing classic. In concert with the Aikau family, today's dramatic, humbling challenge was mounted. Each Hawaiian winter, a select group of invitees chosen by polling among big wave experts and riders alike would be welcomed to Waimea Bay at the start of a three month waiting period. If the Bay called the day, they would be there. |
