Surfing in Punta Cana is one of the favorite activities that people like to do in there. Many surfers like to go on their vacation to this nice spot. This sport is practiced all around the world. Wherever you can find big waves you will probably find a surfer there. There might be people that are not familiar with the surfing sport. Surfing usually consist on a riding an ocean wave over a surfboard. Apparently the people from Tahiti were the first ones to surf. Some sailors from Europe saw them and documented how the natives executed this sport. There are many places all around the world where you can learn to surf effectively. Although surfing in Punta Cana is very nice, is not the ideal place for a person to start practicing unless you have an instructor with you.
For a person to start surfing they need a surfboard first. You find many types like long boards, surf mats, knee boards, skim boards and more. In the old times surfboards were made of wood but as time passes newer and most efficient models appeared. Fiberglass and polyurethane are the most common materials used for surf boards these days. Other things you will need besides the surfboard are: the leash (if you do not want your board to go the sea and beyond), some track pads to prevent slipping, surf wax, and skegs commonly known as fins. If you plan to surf on colder waters you will probably need a wetsuit as well.
Tips for surfing:
1. The first thing you must do is to find the point where you are balanced. This part can be a bit tricky. Once you find it make a mark on the board with a marker or with wax to know where you will lay preferably will be the spot near your chin.
2. Now if the board nose tries to get into the water you must slide a little to the back and change the spot on your chin at bit to the back too.
3. If put too much weight in the back it will be a problem too. Once you find that point where the board is balanced on the water you are ready to do some paddling.
4. When paddling alternative the arms so you can achieve a constant speed. Now is the time to sit on the board and finally stand on it. The key is to keep your cool and do not get desperate and panic. Once you are able to stand, you must assume position of a sumo wrestler. Use your hands above the waist to keep some balance without looking down.
5. Now surfing in Punta Cana can be done as long you find the right spot. Macao beach is the place if you want to surf here. The Macao beach can be found northwest of Bavaro. The waves in here are pretty standard nothing too low or too high. You have to bring your own surfboard to this area since there are no places to rent boards around there.
6. You can rent a car to go to this area or pay a taxi to go there but if you pay a taxi is better to pay him to stay and wait for you, otherwise coming back to your resort can be quite a problem. The beach is mostly deserted as very few people in this area like to surf so is advisable to go accompanied there and during the day.
