Beach volleyball is an Olympic team sport which is played on sand. Like additional variants of volleyball game, two teams, apart by a high net, attempt to score points versus the other by hitting a ball on the other courtyard team. Combative beach volleyball teams usually comprise by two players, though amateur variations can hold up to six players.
Initiating in Southern California and Hawaii Island, sand volleyball game now encounters worldwide popularity, even in nations without conventional beaches, such as Switzerland. Though generalized in Southern California, the first immortalized sand volley games took place on the beaches of Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii at the Outrigger Canoe Club. Originally configured to apply to bored surfers something to do while the surf was down, the game rapidly emerged into more organized six-man matches. The most famous ahead of time player was legendary waterman, Duke Kahanamoku.
In 1920, Santa Monica, California produced a large sandy field for public enjoyment, setting the germ for volleyball beach evolution in that area. The first permanent nets started to come out, and amateur games were shortly being played on public regions of the beach, as well as in private beach clubs. Eleven such beach clubs came out in the Santa Monica region, starting in late 1922. The first inter-club contests were arranged in 1924, marking the first beach volleyball tournaments to be played in California.
Most of these early sand volleyball game matches were played with teams of at least six players per team, such like interior volleyball. The conception of the modern two-man beach volleyball game, however, is attributable to Paul Johnson known as Pablo, an indoor volleyball player. In the summer of 1930, while expecting for players to come out for a six-man game, Johnson decided to try playing with only the four present players. The game was eternally changed.
This sport started to come out in Europe in the 1930s. By the forties, doubles tourneys were being played on the beaches of Santa Monica for prizes. In the sixties, an effort to start a pro volleyball league was caused in Santa Monica. It failed, but a professional tournament was accommodated in France for 30,000 French francs. The first Manhattan Beach Open was organized in 1960. The tournament is now considered the Rose Bowl of Sand Volley.
In the 1970s, a couple of professional tournaments in Santa Monica were patronized by beer and cigarette companies. The first pro beach volleyball tournament was the Olympia World Championship of Beach Volleyball, arranged on Labor Day weekend, in 1976, at Will Rogers State Beach in Santa Monica, California. The event was coordinated by David Wilk from Volleyball Magazine, established in Santa Barbara. The winners of the first big tournament were Greg Lee and Jim Menges. They divide $2,500 out of a total award purse of $5,000.
Volleyball Magazine arranged the event the next year at the same place, this time patronized by Schlitz Light Beer. In 1978 Wilk conceived a sports promotion company called Event Concepts with Craig Masuoka and displaced the World Championship of Beach Volleyball to Redondo Beach. Jose Cuervo Tequila was contracted as sponsor and the prize purse expanded to $10,000. The event was booming and Cuervo funded an expansion the next year to three events. The California Pro Beach Tour started with tournaments in Laguna Beach, Santa Barbara and the World Championship in Redondo.
In next years the circuit amplified nationwide and was renamed the Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. It comprised of five events in California and tournaments in Florida, Colorado and Chicago. Top players such as Karch Kiraly, Singin Smith, Andy Fishburn and Steve Obradovich where comprised. By 1984 the Pro Beach comprised of 16 events round the nation and had a full prize purse of $300,000. At the end of the year, even so, Event Concepts was dismissed of the sport by a players' strike at the World Championship and the Association of Volleyball Professionals was instituted.
At the professional level, the sport stayed fairly obscure until the 1980s when sand volleyball got a tide in fame. Players like Karch Kiraly and Sinjin Smith turned in household names. In 1987, the FIVB made the first World Beach Volleyball Championships, played in Rio de Janeiro. The FIVB began coordinating worldwide professional tourneys, and laid the groundwork for the sport Olympic entry in 1996.
In spite of its expanded fame in the 80's and 90's, American beach volleyball endured setbacks. In early 1998, the American women professional tour shut its doors and filed for bankruptcy. Later that same year, the American Volleyball Professional men tour also registered for bankruptcy, troubled by problems such as player-run organization.
In 2001, the AVP reappeared as a profit public company that blended the males and females professional tours, with same prize money for both sexes.
Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor, which earned two successive gold medals in 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics, were stated the greatest beach volleyball team ever. Amid female beach volleyball players, Misty May has the record of most tournaments won with 106 career wins. If you want to find more details about this beach sport, take a look on the below website.
