The most popular freshwater shark, the Bala shark is one of the many fish in the family Cyprinidae. The fish in this family are not really true sharks, but are commonly referred to as them because of their similar body shape and torpedo body and fins. Nevertheless, these freshwater sharks are some of the most popular and cool fish you can stock in your tank because of their speed, aggression and look. Many of these sharks need a large fish tank that is at least 50 gallons or else they could become overcrowded, stressed and die. Keep that in mind when setting up your tank and stocking it with sharks. Here is list of the top three freshwater sharks.

Bala shark

I’ve got to start with the classic, the Bala. You can find the Bala shark in just about any fish store because of their popularity among fish keepers. They can be pretty easy fish to keep and will eat most live and other food. One thing to keep in mind with these sharks is that they are high jumpers and will jump out of your tank or injure itself on the lid if you don’t take the proper precautions. It is always a good idea to keep the lid open and observe them when feeding to make sure if one of them jumps out of the tank you are there to put it back in. Otherwise it is good to keep the lid closed.

Red Tail shark

These dark, cool looking sharks are another popular freshwater shark option. The Red Tail shark is, of course, known for its red tipped tail and deep black color. These are cool fish but are often very territorial and will harass other Red Tail sharks if kept together. An interesting fact about these sharks is that they are exclusively bred in captivity and are extinct in the wild.

Rainbow shark

These colorful, fun sharks are one of the few freshwater sharks that are known for being bottom feeders. They have a slightly more pointed snout and rounded bottom with allows them to scour the bottom of the tank and act as aquarium cleaners. They are a good shark to keep if you are looking for a fish to clean up leftover fishfood in your tank. Like the Red Tail they can be territorial if kept with other similar sharks or their own kind. While it is fun to watch them head and tail butt each other, one of them will likely die from the injuries or stress so it is not wise to keep them together.
