Perfect Wave

Want to be like the professionals in bodyboarding? Learning the basics, constant right practice, discipline and determination will drive you to be more than the pro's. Big shots in bodyboarding are now enjoying their fame through hard earned skills. This is your time to be a professional, so gear up and we are going to check the fundamentals in bodyboarding.

Before you begin mastering those killer moves, you must first know how to swim and have the complete gear before hitting the water. Now that you have those, let us check some basic moves and tricks done in bodyboarding:

How to paddle? First thing you need to learn in paddling is the proper position of the body. Position your body that your hips should be touching the back portion of the board. Place both hands on the upper part of the board and make sure to have your elbows seated on the board. Slightly arch your body while keeping your head up. Start paddling by submerging your fins and start kicking those feet from underwater. Paddling without submerging those fins is a common mistake.

The Takeoff. For a perfect takeoff, you need to catch a big wave and get closer to it as fast as you can. To help you get closer, paddle using one hand while the other hand is holding the nose of the board while slightly pushing it downwards. You can also paddle with both your feet and hand, but make sure that your feet are underwater when you paddle.

Once you can determine that you will be able to catch the wave, slowly turn your back to the shore and start paddling forward. Your right hand should be locked to the upper part of the board and your arms firmly attached to the edge. This allows your right hand to stay in control with the waves and your left hand for turning to a different direction. Once at the bottom of the wave you can now start trimming.

The Duckdive . Duckdiving is getting you and the board under the turbulence of the water. Perfect execution of this move can be done through right timing.

Once you see the waves approaching you about six feet away, hold the rails of your board tightly and slightly push your board downwards while sliding your knee on the back portion your board. Your knee will be guiding your board while you continue to go a little deeper. After the wave passes your head slowly pull the rails of the board upward and reposition your knee. You should be slowly going up now until your board pops up.

These are just some basic techniques that you need to learn to become a professional. In practicing, find the perfect spot where big waves are mostly visible. Countries like Aruba, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Indonesia, Vanuatu, Philippines, Guam, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Spain, United Kingdom and USA (Hawaii) have good spots for bodyboarding.
