The history of surfboard fins traces back to Hawaii, where the locals started riding waves for fun using boards made of wood a century ago. In the past, the board was controlled using ones feet and hands in the water. Thanks to Tom Blake, who used his ingenuity to resolve board control problems and give rise to a modern sport loved and enjoyed by many. There have been three evolutions to the surfboard fin history all involving different designs.
George Greenough first used his designs on kneeboards, confirming to him its success that later set how others would fit his designs on their board like Bob McTavish. Features to the surfboard did improve tremendously in terms of shape and size. Steve Lis introduced a model that he used on his fish design model. It was not until the late 70's that Simon Anderson, an Australian, modified the surfboard to include a three fin design. It facilitated a more maneuverable and radical board.
In 1982, the Campbell brothers created the 5 fin design, but it were not until the 1990's that it was introduced into the market. It was given the name bonzer and with collaboration from the industry professionals, it was accorded its due respect. Due to its success, Rusty started promoting his design that was identical. Since bronzer was already recognized, his attempts were unsuccessful. Truly the unrecognized efforts of the Campbell brothers who gave rise to a flourishing industry that employs lots of people and contributes revenue to the economy is a sad story. Today, selection has been made efficient through the effort of renowned brilliant minds.
The history of surfboard fins has come a long way and worth narration to the present and future generation. Surfboard fin history has made it possible for the better designs to be made that are easy to control and use.
