Surfboard Foam Blanks

This is the illustrious history of a storied sport: how what began as exclusive to Polynesian kings and royalty became an icon for an indispensable subculture of American life. Take any modern surfboard off the rack of your local board shack and you'll have the culmination of 300 years of disasters, experimentation, and surf legends resting in your hands.

Know your roots.

Surfing began ages ago as the sport of the social elite in the Hawaiian Islands-the bigger your surfboard, the bigger your status. Understandably, the boards they rode were colossal. To give you some idea, picture the biggest longboard in your quiver (for you non-surfers out there, the longest board most surfers will ever take into the ocean will weigh in at an incredible 10 feet): the board you use to catch pond ripples on windless days. Now double it in length. Now replace your feather light surfboard epoxy with SOLID redwood. Now remove the fins and try carrying that beast to the water.

The sheer size of each board and the lack of fins meant that each board took incredible skill to ride and could only go one direction: straight back to shore.

Fast forward 200 years to the early 20th century. Olympian Duke Kahanamoku reintroduces surfing to the world and some MAJOR renovations start rolling in as the sport EXPLODES in popularity. Surfboards drop down to the 10 foot range and the much lighter balsa construction begins. Surf riders everywhere rejoice as board weight drops below the 100 lb mark.

By the 1950s, surfing was a completely different beast. Fins, fiberglass, and polyurethane foam cores, these boards were a major defining point in surf history. Suddenly surfers were able to play a much more active role; no more standing and coasting. Epic shredding begins.

1990s. Modern robotics enters the fray. Machine shaped boards allow for thousands of new surfers to ride new, brand name boards for affordable prices-but small traditional board shapers suffer. The world sees the introduction of the epoxy surfboard. For now the material is just an afterthought: still much more expensive than fiberglass, hard to shape, and presenting no real workable benefits besides the lighter weight.

2006: Clark Foam, the world largest supplier of polyurethane blanks for fiberglass boards suddenly closes its doors. Epoxy suddenly goes from the unwanted redheaded stepchild of water sports, to the next big thing. A formula change to epoxy technology makes construction more environmentally friendly and adds some extra flex to the boards.

Today, epoxy surfboards are the backbone of the industry-the ride of choice for tens of thousands of surfers. Get in on the action, and make your mark on surf history.

With the summer just over the horizon, now is the BEST time to pick up a new board and get started on your grand surfing adventure. Looking for a new epoxy surfboard? Just looking to buy a surfboard? Let Degree33 take care of you.
