Surfboard Surf Long

Whether you own a starter surfboard or a more expensive model, sooner or later you'll need to learn how to repair a surfboard. Your surfboard is eventually going to get a ding, there's just no way to avoid it. The water may be soft, but the rocks on the beach certainly aren't. While you can protect your board from many dings by keeping it in a protective board bag, when it's in the water being thrown about in the waves, there's a good possibility that it will get damaged.

The first step is to understand how your board is constructed. While older surfboards were made of a single piece of wood, and any damage to the board made it unusable, most modern surfboards are easily repaired without a visit to the surf shop. Today, most surfboards consist of an outer resin or fiberglass shell around a foam core. This foam is very absorbent, which can mean trouble if the outer shell becomes cracked or broken, exposing the foam to water. Over time, the water can get between the foam core and the outer resin shell, causing the shell to delaminate or separate from the core. This can cause the board to gain water weight, lowering performance and creating weak spots.

So, if your board's been dinged, how do you fix it? The first step is make sure the are is completely dry so that you're not sealing in water within the core of your board. Pres down around the hole or crack. If any water seeps out of the foam core, it's not dry yet. Your surfboard repair will last a lot longer if you don't seal it with water left inside the foam core. Now, sand the damaged area smooth so that the new material will be able to get a good grip on the board.

The next steps depend on the type of shell on your surfboard. There are two main types, epoxy resin and fiberglass resin. If your board is epoxy, apply a thin layer of resin to seal the board. Apply enough resin to fill the ding. Let it cure, and then use sandpaper to blend the repair in with the rest of the surfboard. If your board is comprised of a fiberglass shell, you'll need to cut a piece of fiberglass cloth that is slightly larger than the damaged area of the board. Then, mix together the fiberglass resin and hardener, both of which can be found in a hardware store. This process should always be done outdoor and in a well-ventilated area because of the chemicals used. Place the cloth over the area to be repaired, and saturate it with the resin and hardener mixture. When it has dried completely, the cloth forms the new shell of the board.

Most of the time, dings are small and easily fixed a home. Larger dings may require the care of a surf shop. Over time, however, your board can accumulate enough dings and signs of wear that it may be time to retire the board.
