Kiteboarding or kitesurfing (surfing with a kite) is popular because they allow people to indulge two thrills-boarding and flying. The kites also allow more time for tricks and stunts as they give the rider more hang time. If you're looking to learn how to do this sport, it's best to get instructions from a professional; if however, you are simply interested in reading the very basics, this article is for you.
The first thing you want to do when learning how to kiteboard or kitesurf is spend some time simply learning your way around your kite. You can best learn how it controls and what kind of wind speed you'll need to get off the ground by flying it the same way you'd fly a small kite. Many experts recommend spending a minimum of twenty hours simply learning how your kite controls from the ground, learning how to launch it, and how to land it without it crashing. Buy yourself a trainer kite for this process as it will have everything clearly set out for you. In conjunction with this, practice your board skills, either on a surf board or snow board so that you can get the best feel for your board.
Once you've gotten the best idea of how to operate your board and your kite separately, it's time to put it together. The best way to do this safely is to get some professional instruction. This is safer than trial and error and will save you a lot of frustration, time and money in the long run. If you can't find instructors in your town, then you can find tutorials online through company sites and enthusiasts; however, this will not completely replace having a person right there to show you how to kiteboard or how to kitesurf.
Once you've learned how to kiteboard or kitesurf, you have to make sure you have the correct equipment for yourself, your needs, and the type of winds you get. The larger the kite, the lower the wind speed has to be in order to be effective. You also have to figure out what you're going to be doing with it-land kiteboarding uses a different kind of kite from kitesurfing; for one thing, if you're learning how to kitesurf, you'll want a kite which can float and doesn't deflate easily. You also want to be well aware of how fast and strong the wind is blowing and has an area large enough to accommodate your lift-off and landing. Kiteboarding and kitesurfing takes up a lot of room, especially if you're just learning.
The other thing to remember when learning how to kiteboard or kitesurf is to be aggressive with your kite. It has a large pull and can move you at decent speeds and so you have to have a good pull in return in order to retain control over it; this tip is something which beginners often forget out of fear of breaking something or in the excitement of surfing or boarding with a kite.
The best way to learn how to kiteboard or kitesurf however is to talk to a professional instructor and learn from him or her. Barring that, you can learn from online tutorials. The most important things to remember are to familiarize yourself with kites via a training kite, familiarize yourself with either a snowboard or a surfboard, whichever one you want to use with your kite, and always ask for help when learning. Finally, you need to know what kind of equipment you'll need. As long as you keep these things in mind, you'll be kiteboarding or kitesurfing in no time.
