The idea behind handcrafted surfboards are that boards are designed for the individual surfer. Designers consider one's weight, height, the type of waves he/she may ride, etc.
By the 1990's, surf manufactures began experimenting with the idea of having surfboards mass- produced. As a result, the spread of cost per unit were cheaper and greater quantity of boards could be delivered in less time. Consequently, the effect of factory-made boards decreased the quality and structure of the board.
As technology became more cost efficient, more manufacturers and board shapers began using computerized shaping machines to make the craft. Producers could create clone boards by punching in the dimensions of a master blank and the foam cutting machine would cut to the specific measurements.
Since production practices are cheaper overseas, mostly in Thailand, China, and Sri Lanka due to the countries lack of ethical labor, safety, and environmental laws, the countries became the ideal place for manufacturing. The boards are being made by those whom have never surfed versus shapers that have been surfing most likely their whole lives.
Handcrafted boards have a very long and tedious process. The shaper has to form the foam core in a cement mold. The mold has two halves which are clamped together when the mold is heated. Polyurethane chemicals are poured in the mold, which triggers heat, as a result, a white foam occurs. This process is much different then the factory made boards.
A thin stringer is glued between the halves. This gives that board its durability because it helps protect the board from breaking in half.
Once the board has dried, it must be shaped to the person/wave characteristics he or she will surf. The outline of the finished board is traced and then cut with a saber saw. The final shape is used by a power planer which gives the board its contour and smoothness. There are no automatic machines involved in any of these processes.
A power sander removes any of the raised areas that were missed by the planer, the stringer is contured with a hand plane. A fine piece of sandpaper is used to finalize the board. The fin box is marked, and the shaper's signature will be found on the board. Just like an artist and the painting he created.
The laminating process is ready. Basically, less on the technical side, the board will be covered in fiberglass and resign to form the external shell of the board. If the customer wants a design, the designer will use and air-brush gun. The resign is poured over the fiberglass using a squeegee. The shaper has to make sure that there are just enough fiberglass on every dimensions of the board or it will cause variables in the strength and durance of the board. The process is repeated. The final finishes and the fin will be added last. Factory made boards are sprayed and are not sprayed twice, as a result, your board is littered with weak spots causing it to ding easier than a handcrafted board.
When you go to you local surf shop, look at where the board was made (China). If it is designed by a shaper, look for his or her signature, look at the fine imperfections, such as the shapers hand prints. I have used both handmade boards and factory produced boards.
I bought my first Innerlight board (factory produced) and it was dented just from my soft racks, it only last about two months. I finally purchased a handcrafted board from Waterboyz and it has lasted me over four years through some pretty hard surf.
