On your search for safety apparel, you have likely come to the point where you need to choose between coveralls or two-piece suits consisting of protective shirts and pants. The first consideration should be one of safety. The second part of consideration is a balance between comfort, practicality, and affordability. While both options are effective, each one has various benefits and downfalls that can make a big difference in your satisfaction of a product.
Safety Considerations
While neither is necessarily chemical proof, one-piece disposable coveralls do offer slightly more protection. One of the biggest reasons is the gaps that can occur between the two pieces. Coveralls come with elastic sleeves and cuffs to help protect you from chemical splashes and particulate matter. Safety tops only come with elastic or non-elastic cuffs with the collar and bottom remaining loose.
Choices For Comfort
One of the biggest downfalls of one-piece safety suits is the simple fact that they are exactly that -- all one piece. They can be faster to put on than separates, but they restrict your overall movement. This is particularly true if the suit is too small. With separates, the protective shirts and pants move independently from each other and allow for unlimited expansion between the two.
Some people choose to buy coveralls that are a few sizes too big to allow for extra movement. While this might be acceptable in some situations, this is nothing short of dangerous in situations where you will be working with machinery of any kind. The excess material can become caught in the machine, pulling your body into the machine. Always select clothing that is big enough that you are not straining against the seams, but not too big that the material hangs and bunches in front.
Affordable Selections
In many situations, you will notice that one portion of your clothing needs to withstand more abuse than the rest of your protective gear. If you are wiping stain onto hardwood, for example, you may notice that your sleeves are coated while the rest of your clothing remains almost untouched. If you are spraying pesticides onto the grass, on the other hand, you will notice that your pant legs need to be replaced before the rest. In these cases, you may be better to purchase protective shirts and pants rather than one-piece suits. This saves you a significant amount of money because it costs less to replace one portion than it is to purchase a new suit.
Similarly, you may only need to use half of a suit, and therefore, purchasing safety apparel that covers your entire body would simply be a waste of material and money. For situations where you will need to replace your entire outfit between jobs, coveralls would make the better choice since they are often more cost effective to purchase than two separate pieces.
Selecting the right safety clothing requires that you determine any safety requirement the job will entail. Once you know what you need to keep yourself safe, you can consider the financial and personal preferences for the job to decide for yourself whether a complete outfit is better than separate protective shirts and pants.
