Tech Flippers

Most young boys in the 1960s grew up with the clean-cut, invincible Action Man, which is the U.K. version of G.I. Joe. Recently, the vintage Action Man enjoyed a popular comeback after a successful re-launch last 2006 as the 40th year anniversary edition, and again last year in London.

The 2009 London edition is the one that is generating immense attention because Character Group, which is the licensed U.K. toy company for the vintage Action Man, decided to come up with a range of HM Armed Forces action figures. They launched 10-inch figures to represent each of the 3 departments of the UK Armed Forces: the Royal Army, the Royal Air Force, and the British Navy.

The toy company worked closely with the Ministry of Defense, and the actions figures released were a phenomenal success, to say the least. Mortar Man is the figure with heavy ammunition, and dressed in desert gear. Accessories for Mortar Man includes a battle tank, spring-powered gun, and working tracks.

The Infantryman mimics British troops in Afghanistan and Iraq with realistic Kevlar jackets and helmet. The Navy figure is a diver complete with mask, flippers, and oxygen tank, while the Air Force has his own parachute that works like the real thing.

More than 40 years after the first models appeared in toy stores all over country, the nostalgia of buying vintage toys has turned into a collector's scramble to complete the full line-up of action figures. Now, with the latest U.K. versions, it appears that our much-loved and irrepressible vintage Action Man is not about to hang his boots just yet.
